FAQs: To undress or not to undress?

One of the top questions for massage:
“Do you need to undress for a massage?
Do I need to get naked?”

Short answer
No. Absolutely not.

Long answer
One of the beauties of Thai massage and Bowen therapy is - you keep your clothes on!

I will ask you to wear clothes that allow movement for Thai massage, and while jeans are not the best, I will accommodate what feels safe and comfortable to you. I also keep loose pants and t-shirts available if you are arriving from work or want to leave the laundry to me!

As for other massage styles I offer (like cupping), you may need to undress to some extent. You can often adapt your clothing choices, like shorts or wide-leg pants, if you need a foot, ankle, or knee massage.

What does undress to your comfort really mean?

Ultimately, undressing is ALWAYS to your level of comfort. I know this seems like such a vague term and doesn’t really give you any guidelines or suggestions.

In North Carolina, all licensed massage therapists are required to use draping to keep our clients covered. Draping means I will use a sheet plus a blanket to cover all areas of your body that I am not massaging. When I work on an arm, I fold the sheet back and tuck it under your arm, so it’s secure. I follow the same protocol for the leg.

When I work on your back, I fold the drape down at the hips. If you’re wearing underwear, I’ll gently tuck the sheet around the waistband to protect your clothes from massage oil. If you’re wearing a bra, I’ll work around it. If you’re wearing a tank top or shorts or long johns or a space suit, I’ll work through it.

I don’t care, and I’m not judging you. Our massage is about you. Your Comfort. Your Choice. It’s essential you feel comfortable. For some people, that means leaving some clothing on. For others, it means taking it all off. There is no right or wrong; this is your massage.

So Undress to Your comfort level
and know it’s fine,
whatever you choose to leave on or take it all off.
