Cupping & Gua Sha
Cupping is like the inverse of massage - rather than applying pressure to muscles, the suction in the cups causes the skin and superficial muscle layer to be lightly drawn into the cup. For most clients, this is a particularly relaxing and relieving sensation . The cups are gently moved across the skin (often referred to as "gliding cupping). This movement encourages the lymphatic system to move the stagnation out of the body creating a detoxification effect. Swelling and inflammation are often greatly reduced during the cupping session. Some clients may experience a “cup Kiss” or mark of the cup, as toxins are pulled to the surface.
Cup marks are almost inevitable and often desired for the treatment to be highly effective.
By drawing a smooth edged instrument across the skin where an injury or imbalance resides, a distinctive reddening of the skin, known as "sha" can be observed. This is 'colouration' is a positive response and brings immediate and lasting benefits by reducing inflammation, coldness, tightness and pain from both the superficial and deeper levels of the body. Typically gua sha is very effective for treating all forms of injury, as well as heat syndromes, dizziness, chills and aches. In short, it has been said: "if there is illness, gua sha treats it; if there is no illness, it strengthens our bodies". Gua sha is a perfect compliment to cupping.
This relaxing facial treatment increases circulation and nutrients to the skin, increases lymphatic flow, and reduces inflammation by using cups that are specifically designed for treatments of the face, neck and upper chest. The reverse suction that is applied works to gently lift the facial tissues. As a result, the tissues receive a fresh supply of oxygen and nutrients; and waste from the cells, and other harmful toxins, and substances are eliminated. Results are seen and felt immediately. Excess fluid is also drained and the facial muscles relax with the movement of the suction cups. This movement of fluid is why cupping works to relieve allergy congestion and sinus issues.
